Continuing Clean Water Projects in Guatemala
For One Another volunteers Pam and Dennis Boehle-Silva spent 10 days distributing filters in several pueblos around Antigua, Guatemala, in addition to distributing filters to teachers and staff at a Spanish language school. For One Another, in partnership with Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Thrivent Financial, has been able to donate 70 filters to communities in areas around Antigua, Guatemala since 2017.
In 2017, FOA supported the installation of 10 water filters in and around Antigua. Our volunteers returned in 2018 to check on the status of the filters from the previous year and to work with local interpreters and community members to install 60 more filters in surrounding communities, including 35 filters in Colonia Hermano Pedro, 15 in Santa Inez, five in San Cristobal el Bajo, four in other pueblos outside of Antigua, and one filter at Centro de Rehabilitación, a rehabilitation center for those recovering from addictions in Antigua.
Our volunteers worked with interpreters to explain the filtration process, the function of the filter, and the cleaning process.
When Pam and Dennis returned to check on the status of the filters donated the previous year, they learned that the filters are in good condition, and in one case, has already helped Brian, a child in one of the families stay in school. In 2017 his mother reported that he often was plagued by stomach issues that caused him to miss school days, and in 2018, we learned that he has missed no school days this year!
It is humbling to see how grateful people are for this gift of clean water. Either they’ve consumed dirty water or, if they had the money, paid for bottled water. This gift of filters allows them to drink clean water, thereby greatly decreasing illnesses and time off work, doctors’ fees, etc. For those who were spending money on bottled water, this frees up money for other necessities. Our goal, along with the For One another Foundation is to provide clean, safe drinking and cooking water for families and their neighbors. The gift is meant to be shared! – Pamela Boehle-Silva, volunteer with For One Another
Pamela and Dennis will be traveling to Guatemala again in February 2019 with the goal of bringing 100 filters to even more families and communities!
