Border Humanitarian Relief with MAP International
Monday, January 7th, 2019
We’re proud to be starting 2019 by supporting the work of MAP International, a global health and relief organization that provides disaster relief aid both domestically and internationally. MAP has been working over the past year to support migrant children and families who are seeking asylum in the United States. Many of these families and their children arrive in the US traumatized by violence in their home counties, and weak and exhausted from their dangerous and arduous journey. The US Family Detention and Processing Centers have consistently been found to be unsuitable and unsafe for families with children, especially since they were not designed to hold detainees overnight and conditions have worsened with the increased demands.
MAP is working with an organization operating a Humanitarian Respite Center in Texas that serves mothers and children after their release from detention and processing centers. The respite center helps immigrants who have been released from detention to rest, focus on hygiene and nutrition, and receive minor medical treatment as needed. The center is serving up to 200 mothers and children each day, who are in urgent need of food, shelter, and healthcare, before they travel to join their extended families.
MAP is providing medicine and Disaster Relief Kits used to support detainees being released, who otherwise would have no access to medical care. Each kit contains essential hygiene items and health supplies designed to prevent the spread of disease.
Although a major focus of our work is supporting communities across the globe in accessing clean water, we know that access to hygiene and healthcare, especially for young children, is also a key factor in quality of life and future success. We are so grateful to MAP and their partners for the work they are doing to support families who truly need it, and excited to support their important work!
We hope to be able to continue supporting this important work – if you would like to give directly to this project, you can donate here and list “MAP Border Relief” in the comments!
